En 1966, inspirados por la filosof\u00eda de Dorothy Day y el Movimiento del Trabajador Cat\u00f3lico, esta pareja de inmigrantes irlandeses fund\u00f3 Casa Mar\u00eda, situada a un kil\u00f3metro y medio de la parroquia de San Benito el Moro. El prop\u00f3sito de Casa Mar\u00eda era promover la pr\u00e1ctica del compartir directo y personal con personas en situaci\u00f3n de pobreza, recibiendo invitados en su cocina para una comida.<\/p>\n<p>Un n\u00famero creciente de hombres, mujeres y ni\u00f1os del vecindario se unieron a ellos para esta comida diaria, que r\u00e1pidamente super\u00f3 su peque\u00f1o espacio.  Se vieron obligados a buscar un local m\u00e1s grande. En colaboraci\u00f3n con el capuchino Alex Luzi y tras mucha oraci\u00f3n y reflexi\u00f3n, la Comida Comunitaria de San Ben se traslad\u00f3 a su ubicaci\u00f3n actual el 13 de noviembre de 1970.<\/p>\n<p>Desde el principio, se hizo mucho hincapi\u00e9 en el aspecto comunitario de la Comida. Esto se puso de manifiesto en dos frentes. En primer lugar, grupos patrocinadores de diversas iglesias, organizaciones y grupos c\u00edvicos de toda la comunidad de Milwaukee se comprometieron a ofrecer la Comida de domingo a viernes por la noche.
